Great fight!
When I first watched this fight on Saturday, I thought that there was a "chance" that Lyoto might have just barely lost it, however, watching it for a second (and even third and fourth) time, it's quite clear that Lyoto had the fight in his favor, at least through successfully scored points.
Granted, Shogun landed some pretty darned solid shots, but in total Lyoto scored ALOT more successful hits on Shogun. I feel as tho the commentators for the fight are what made it seem as though Shogun was "winning" more than he really was. In fact, reviewing the fight, the commentators shouted out "hits" by Shogun that never even landed, were deflected/countered, and in general were NOT scoring hits. Many of Shoguns attacks were actually stuffed by Lyoto, and those don't count as scoring points, yet, the commentators yelled and raved as if they were actually hits! It's incredible, the amount of drama they start with those comments. Many of the "body shots" that they stated that Shogun landed were actually checked and deflected by Lyoto. Great work on Lyoto's part there. I do feel as though the commentators were just a "tad" biased, and in favor of Shogun. There were great hits by Lyoto that the commentators didn't even mention...really bad work on their side of the coin, as they are suppose to be give less than biased commentating, and that's not what we saw on Saturday at all.
Again, it was a REALLY good fight, and probably one of Lyoto's hardest fought yet, however, at the end of the fight Lyoto was the victor through his success at scoring definate points and defending against most of Shogun's attempts to land his own. More props to Lyoto is that he caught a few very unlucky and SOLID rib shots early on in the fight and still powered through them for a win. Those rib shots not only hurt, but they drastically reduce a fighters overall ability and speed. The fact that he fought through that great obstacle and was still able to fight, dodge, and strike just goes to show how amazing of a fighter he really is.
I hope that Lyoto takes this fight to heart, and learns from it, because he was indeed very close to losing his title and stature. Learn from this fight Lyoto, and prepare for the fights to come as competitors may have finally found a small "chink" in your armor: that is my advice for him. But good job nonetheless and keep it up!!!

You look at both their faces and tell me who did more damage. Then look at Machidas legs and tell me who did more damage. The Only round i saw Machida win was 3 1 and 2 were close the last 2 were definetely Shoguns.
...
If it was deflected why does machida puts ice on both of his legs and ribs and why does it has a black mark?..maybe it was a dirt?hehe
...
It's no lie, Shogun fought a good fight that night, however, Machida did just a "tad" bit better and pulled off a win.
And Machida was icing down his legs and ribs, because he DID get caught a few good times, no one said he didn't. And the times that he got caught, were very solid. Again, Shogun fought a good fight, no one is arguing that.

...
This is one of the greatest fights i have ever seen. the discipline they both have is incredible. Seeing shogun break down machidas game is unbelievable
...
hey darkmaster, you're a moron if you think Machida won that fight.
What a joke? Are you getting payed for posting this shit?

idiots!
CompuStrike speaks for itself. Rua outlanded Machida 89-50 in Total Strikes landed including 73 Leg Strikes landed. Rua dominated the fight and did just about everything he needed to do to beat the undefeated Machida, including outlanding Machida in every round, but. All 3 judges scored it 48-47 or 3-2.
Machida won because he is more marketable. There's a lot more money in having an undefeated karate guy as champion.

fixed fight
macheda won cuz dana white hasnt had a light heavy weight successfully defend his belt since rampage.
are u crazy
machida was dominated in the fight almost every mma fighter said so except for machidas butt buddy anderson silva
about shogun and machida
youd think theyd learn english by now, lol, it was a good fight cant blame machida though, judges scored it not him. Very close though
...
No doubt. 3-2. fightmetric is bullshit!!!!! very wrong stats.. i counted 17 hits for machida in the first round and they counted like 11.. I think they counted hits for Lyoto only when he actually attacked Shogun and they didn't count his hits in defend of Shogun's attacks
close fight
I wouldn't say there was no doubt that it was 3-2.
In my opinion, round 1-3 = Lyoto
round 4-5 = Shogun
2 could have gone to either.. but even Dana said he thought that one went to Machida along with all of the judges.

...!
Rua mimed Lyotos' moves, that was a gay stategy. I would also give the victory to Lyoto. 1, 2, 3 Lyoto, 4, 5 Rua.
..
>.> I thought round 3 was clearest, then round one. As the most significant exchange in round 1 was probably Machida's clinch and the stuffed takedown.
machida won
machida definately won this fight yes it was close and all, everytime u fuckers say o who took more damage this who took more damage that its about point scoring if u couldnt tell machida won this fight watch it without sound so u wont hear rogan and dumbass mike yell all about shoguns success so fuck off u retards thats whats up
shogun whooped that boys ass!!!!!!
shogun picked the "dragon" apart like it wasnt shit. its hard to believe that someone culd get beat up so badly and shogun made it look easy
rematch
that was close lyoto landed some vicious knees that that clown rogan didnt even mention like about 5 in the clinch of the first round. . nice fight for a rematch
hmm
I'm a huge Machida.fan but this was just ridiculous. Sucks that it's all about Dana promoting a rematch.
This was Rua's fight all the way.

My Scores
Round 1: Lyoto
Round 2: Rua (very close)
Round 3: Lyoto (close)
Round 4: Lyoto
Round 5: Lyoto
So I scored it 49-46 but would understand any judging between 50-45 Lyoto and 48-47 Lyoto (rounds 2 and 3 going to Rua)
Round 2: Rua (very close)
Round 3: Lyoto (close)
Round 4: Lyoto
Round 5: Lyoto

Anyone who gave rounds 4 & 5 to Macheetah doesn't have an unbiased opinion. I scored it 4 rounds to 1 in favor of Shogun Rua. He destroyed Macheetah.
BullShit Win
When Vegas got involved in the game, you'll see a bullshit decision just like this one.
It's all about the money!!
Just look at the "Winner" Lyoto at the end of the fight before the announcement, did he look like he was winning? He scored one or two punches but mostly he was running around in the entire fight ..
The belt belonged to Shogun, no doubt about it!

Turn off your sound
You guys giving this fight so convincingly to Rua should watch it again without the sound on. It makes a huge difference in the impression you get when you don't have Rogan & Goldberg's one sided chatter running through your head the entire time.
Fight Scores
Round 1: Machida Narrow could have went both ways
Round 2: Machida (stuffed takedown, cleaner strikes)
Round 3: Machida
Round 4: Rua
Round 5: Rua
I had machida winning 3-2..but could have gone either way..cant wait for the rematch to settle everything

Round 3: Machida
Round 4: Rua
Round 5: Rua

man
I Though Shogun Would Win This I Was Excited But Then Machida Won But Rematch Shogun's Going To Blast All His Thoughts PERIOD.
lyoto lost
mmajunkie has a computerized scoring cared that tallies everything and it the fight 48-46 shogun and a computer is flawless unless you mess it up so shogun won guys sorry
Try NOT listening...
to the commentary or the crowd.
I turned the volume off. The score should have been 29-26.
Lyoto clearly wins rounds 1-4.
Shogun gets more aggressive in the 5th round. It works. He gains confidence. He finishes strong. The round is entirely his. That on top of a good fight, isn't enough to overcome a great fight by Lyoto.
Seriously, watch again without the commentary. It's ridiculously obvious.

what a fight
Wow, whoever win next fight will rule division i think, these two guy are the best. Mexicans have taken over the sport! Brown pride, war mexico!
Can't wait for the rematch, it was close before.
I watched the many times and with the fight coming up again I watched it a few more. I thought Shogun landed more shots and when I watched some of the exchanges in slow motion especially the big ones you'll notice Machida was either missing or they were bouncing off the forearm and wrists of Shogun meaning he was blocking them. Shogun was more aggressive and dictated 90% of the fight. You can also tell who was fighting their game plan and who wasn't by who was more tired at the end of a fight (Ask GSP about conditioning in regards to following a game plan and seeing it through or watch his interview from Abu Dhabi UFC 112). Machida was alot more tired then Shogun at the end on the fight because he was getting controlled through most of the fight and was taking alot more strikes then Shogun was. Machida had landed some nice shots but almost every shot was answered by Shogun where Machida wasn't able to answer as many back when Shogun initiated, which Shogun initiated most of the strikes.
I'm not overly disappointed though because the decision from the judges was what I expected cause I know judges don't give points for controlling the center of the cage and a lot of the punches Machida threw looked like they were landing unless you watch them in slow motion as well as judges tend to believe you must completely dominate an opponent through grappling(not holding the center of the cage) or ko a champ to beat a champ. This is why Machida won.

...
well they may be FROM spain, but their lineage looks mexican, sorry if an error, but i'm pretty sure there's quite a bit of mexican blood throwing through those two monsters.
...
Like I said, I realize he doesn't live in Mexico, but I'm just saying Mexican blood runs strong in these guys. Just watch the way they fight. They're way ahead of the field. Brown pride is all I'm saying~! I'm just proud of these guys and our heritage, so no need to get upset.
...
Machida won first three rounds and Shogun won fourth and fifth round...Mike and Rogan are idiots...They were giving all the talk to Shogun since the first round...It is what it is..Live with it people.
...
This is what happens when you get two men with Mexican blood in the ring, they just can't finish each other, they both have too much talent and spirit!
Proud to be Mexican! Can't wait for saturday, either way I got my flag hanging out my window, gonna have a BBQ man!

Challenge The champion
A long comment from Darkmaster but 100% rigth.
If you come to challenge the champion you have to defeat him without any doubt otherwise the title should stay anyway to the champion.

I DON T TINK SO

ROUND 3.MACHIDA (13-10 hits for Machida,BIG RIGHT HAND BY SHOGUN) SCORE 10-9
ROUND 4.SHOGUN(10-6 hits for Shogun, great leg kicks, pathetic role for Machida he got only a good takedown defence,Shogun the aggressor.) SCORE 10-9
ROUND 5.SHOGUN (8-7 hits,good leg kicks) SCORE 10-9
OVERALL: 3 ROUNDS FOR SHOGUN 2 FOR MACHIDA
HITS 54-47
MACHIDA HAD 3 TAKEDOWN BLOCKS
SHOGUN WAS THE AGRESSOR AND GOT THE CENTER OF THE OCTAGON IN EVERY SINGLE ROUND
MACHIDA HAD BETTER DEFENCE THAN SHOGUN
